This study investigates how hyeonggug theory(形局論) of feng-shui(風水) affected the formation of place name in terms of mountain and village in the shape of phoenix(鳳凰形). Having the social and contractual character, place name is named and changed by natural environment, history, legend, folklore,
religion and sense of value of the specific region. If place name is the product of culture and history, we can guess that the formation of place name by feng-shui, one of the our own cultures is related. In Orient, phoenix is a propitious, precious and imaginary bird. Phoenix means man of noble personality, holy king and peaceful times. Phoenix eats only the fruit of bamboo, takes rest
only in paulownia tree and drinks only spring water. In feng-shui, the shape of hyeonggug is typically recognized as land where noble man is cultivated. Thus, mountain or village in the shape of phoenix has diverse methods to keep phoenix. Surveying 134 mountains and villages, most of villages in the
shape of phoenix are named to bamboo and paulownia tree. There are names meaning water to be drunk by phoenix or the nest of phoenix. As per the record in the classics that phoenix sings in Joyang(朝陽), there are village name, Joyang in the paulownia tree which is actually in the shape of phoenix. The above contents mean that mountain (land), the main factor of feng shui hyeonggug theory has ecological recognition as the living organism.
