Lady Sammo was the queen of King Gyeongdeok, 35th king of Silla dynasty, but she was banished from the palace. References to and explanations about her have hitherto focused on her banishment as part of the political dynamics of mid-Silla political history. This paper, however, focuses on her life history and attempts to interpret the political significance of Lady Sammo as represented by the dramatic transformation from being a queen to her banishment.
First, information about her background and the political background of King Gyeongdeok's enthronement are provided, and Lady Sammo's lineage and marital relations are examined. Second, investigation is made into the political background and significance surrounding the event of her "banishment." Lady Sammo was banished soon after King Gyeongdeok's enthronement, but interestingly, she was invested with the title of "Lady Saryang." Furthermore, she appears in history as the donator for the casting of the Bell of Hwangnyong Monastery after she was banished. This shows that although she was no longer the queen of King Gyeongdeok, she was still active under some other social status after her banishment. Especially of interest is Lady Sammo's donation for the casting of the Bell of Hwangnyong Monastery, which was a temple of national importance, in light of the fact that the person who ordered the casting of the bell at the time was King Gyeongdeok, indicating that Lady Sammo's donation can be construed as maintenance of the political relationship between Lady Sammo and her king even after her banishment. As well, considering that the scale of the bell at Hwangnyong Monastery is four times heavier than the Bell of King Seondeok the Great, so-called Aemilae Bell, it could be said Lady Sammo had access to a sizeable financial base even after her banishment from the palace.
