Emerging smart peer-to-peer applications impose new challenges in classifying network traffic. Traditional application identification techniques, such as port-based identification, payload-based identification, host behavior-based identification, tend to fail due to the diversity and complexity of today’s smart applications. Machine learning algorithms can be viable solutions. Supervised machine learning algorithms show better performance with less complexity than unsupervised ones, but need a manual training set construction, which is a critical drawback. We suggest a traffic classification framework, which automatically builds a training set using the LCS (Longest Common Subsequence) algorithm, which does not need a preceded analysis of application flows. We show that our framework detects various application traffic successfully and is more accurate than payload based algorithms.
