This thesis is one that examines the significance of the establishment of the study of culture and heritage of the country and the development of Confucianism in Silla in remembrance of the 1330th anniversary of the establishment of the study of culture and heritage of the country of Silla. It was in the year 682 when the study of culture and heritage of the country was established in Silla, which was the latest among Three Kingdoms. The study of culture and heritage of the country aimed at educating Confucian persons of talent and promoting Confucian ethics. Chun-chu Kim, Gang Su, and Seol Chong played important roles in establishing the study of culture and heritage of the country, and pupils were educated in three grades. The education course was centered on the Five Books of Confucianism, and Moon-seon (an anthology) and San-hak (a study of arithmetic) were also taught. On the other hand, the Analects of Confucius and the Book of Filial Duty were corequisites, which proved that the ethical education of filial piety was emphasized. Among the Confucian scholars of Silla, Gang Su, Seol Chong, and Chi-won Choi are the most representative ones. Gang Su was excellent at writing, so he made a significant contribution to writing diplomatic documents; on the other hand, Seol Chong lectured on Confucian classics with proses written in Chinese characters. Chi-won Choi studied in Dang and achieved a reputation, and he was proficient in Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Chi-won Choi revealed, in his preface to Nallang (husband of Chinese legendary bird) tombstone, that there was Pung-ryu-do (a way of enjoying oneself tastefully and elegantly) as our indigenous thought, and asserted that thoughts of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are involved in Pung-ryu-do. Moreover, the five Buddhist commandments for secular life of Hwarang, which was said to have been written by Won Gwang, has a little bit of Buddhist overtones; however, it is similar to the five duties of Confucianism, and it lays emphasis on ethics such as fidelity, filial love, braveness, benevolence, and trust.
