Seong, Soo-chim (1493~1564, pen name: Cheongsong) is one of the most popular Confucian scholars from the 16th century. He is the father of Seong, Hon (pen name: Ugye) and a student of Cho, Gwang-jo (pen name: Jeong-am). Never taking up a government post, he spent his entire life away from the political circle. He played a pivotal role in re-orienting the practice of Neo-Confucianism in the early-16th-century Joseon Dynasty towards the state of reclusiveness.
It was the influence of his family's scholarly tradition and at the same time of his teacher, Cho, Gwang-jo that led Seong to choose a solitary life and self-discipline. Since he prioritized action over theory, and introspection over politics, his works are far from academic. For this reason, the limited number of studies on his works are in the literary context, with few studies done from the philosophical point of view. This paper aims to shed light on the Confucian scholar's DoHak (道學) spirit and the academic tradition of Musil (務實), focusing on his inner world.
Following his teacher, Seong's works exhibit the features of Sohak (小學), and put particular emphasis on action as opposed to theory. This Musil kind of academic tradition was succeeded to his son Ugye and the Ugye School.
