This present study examined the formation of the study and the scholastic mantle of Gang Hang (pen name Sueun); how he met Fujiwara Seika, the founder of Neo-Confucianism in Japan; the academic role that Sueun played while he was staying in Japan from October 1597 through April 1600; the academic influence on Fujiwara Seika; and academic dialogue between Jeong Yak-yong (pen name Dasan) and three representative Japanese Neo-Confucianism which had bloomed after Fujiwara.
Sueun formulated his study during the golden age of Neo-Confucianism in the Joseon Dynasty. During Jeongyujaeran (the 2nd invasion by Japan following Imjinwaeran), he was held prisoner by the Japanese military and taken to Japan. Even though he was a prisoner of war, he tried to remain a responsible individual and adhere to the principles of Confucianism. He had important, life altering encounters with Fujiwara Seika, who was a Neo-Confucianist sympathizer, and the sponsor of Fujiwara, Akamatsu Hiromichi. Through his relationship with Fujiwara and Akamatsu, Sueun contributed much to the formation and development of Neo-Confucianism in Japan.
When Sueum met Fujiwara Seika, it was a transitional period in the history of Japan moved from the middle age to the modern age. During this transitional period, a new political power, Tokugawa Ieyasu, had emerged in Japanese politics. Fujiwara Seika was the person who pursued a new study that was demanded by modern Japan, represented by the Tokugawa shogunate government. Both Seika and Ieyasu paid attention to Neo-Confucianism as they believed it to be the political morality to usher Japan into the modern age. Against this background, Sueun, who was a prisoner of war from Joseon, introduced Neo-Confucianism to Japan and contributed to the establishment of the governing ideology of modern Japan, and the formulation and development of Neo-Confucianism in modern Japan.
