The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of participation motivation on physical self-efficacy and self-esteem of swimming club members. Subjects of this study were adults who were regularly participating in swimming activity in U sports center and N sports center in D metropolitan city. Excluding 13 out of total 300 questionnaires, 287 were used for actual analysis. The tools used in this study were the Motive of Leisure Sports Participation developed by Yang(2004), the Physical Self-efficacy developed by Hong(1996) and the Self-esteem Scale developed by Kim(2000). The statistical methods used in this study were correlation analysis and multi-regression analysis.
Followings are the results of this study. First, among the subscales of the motive of participation, both intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation had a positive effect on the perceived physical ability. And among the subscales of the motive of participation, intrinsic motivation had a positive effect on the physical self-presentation confidence. Second, among the subscale of the motive of participation, amotivation had a negative effect on self-esteem. Third, both perceived physical ability and the physical self-presentation confidence had a positive effect on self-esteem.
