In 1996, the world best three discount retailers entered into Korea thanks to Korean government’s open trade policy to foreign firms in retail and service sectors; Wal-Mart came from U.S. in 1998, Carrefour from France in 1995, and Tesco from U.K. in 1998, respectively. Moreover, three firms choose different entry modes while it was recognized that the entry mode significantly affects a firm’s preparation and penetration process. For example, Wal-Mart chose to enter with acquisition of Macro, Carrefour with whole owned subsidiary, and Tesco with joint venture with Samsung C&T(Construction and Trading). According to existing literatures, entry costs including transaction cost are enormously affected by ex-ante of entry factors such as, physical and cultural distances. While focusing on selection of entry itself, however, most of them have less paid attention to other factors having effects on aftermath of entry.
In this study, we attempt to provide with several perspectives helpful to resolve aftermath entry problems on localization in foreign markets. After illustrating the evolutionary pattern that each firm grew and developed in its home and global market, we compare ex-ante and ex-post of entry behaviors and suggest three suppositions of knowledge transfer while focusing on the survival and success of three global retailers in Korea market. As a result of our study, we find out that HQ's thrust of exploitation in local market should be balanced with subsidiary's exploitation, a balanced-learning view that March(1991) discovered. Numerous empirical findings support our application of March(1991)'s two learning type into MNEs' expansion and subsidiary's exploratory role in the local market.
