This paper is an exploratory study on Korean ethnic media targeted to Korean population in the United States. The study analyzed not only the structural, organizational characteristics but also contents of ethnic newspapers in Texas. As a result, 2 to 4 reporters worked in Korean ethnic newspapers and they were provided in tabloid format in Korean language. This shows that Korean ethnic newspapers are targeted to Korean immigrants who are familiar with Korean language, not to second or third Korean-Americans who are familiar with English language.
The result of content analysis showed that Korean ethnic newspapers utilized professional experts as columnists who provided much information necessary for immigrant life. Also, the newspapers devoted much space to Korean news that occurred in Korean society. However, they focused much on entertainment news rather than political and economic issues in Korea. This means that Korean ethnic newspapers carry news appealing to the amusement of Korean immigrants rather than transmitting in-depth analysis of political, economic issues. Furthermore, stories dealing with Korean-American community in the United States focused on events and activities of Korean-American organizations. Also, stories containing religious faiths and events also became an important part of Korean ethnic media. However, stories which introduced the Korean traditional culture and customs were seldom found. Overall, Korean ethnic media played an important role not only reinforcing Korean immigrants' connection with Korean society but also helping them to adapt to American society.
