Mou Zongsan(牟宗三, 1909-1995) was a Chinese Neo-Confucian philosopher who diligently studied and, eventually, heavily criticised Kant's philosophy from Chinese Confucian tradition. He translated Kant's three Critiques into Chinese, though from English, and published some studies on Kant. His works on Kant is, however, not limited to translation and commentary, but extended to make use of Kant's thought as a vehicle to explain Confucian system of thought. Mou claimed that Chinese Confucianism established moral metaphysics exceeding Kant's so-called “moral theology.” Kant was to Mou (1) a research subject, (2) a vehicle or instrument for the conceptualization of Confucianism, and (3) the object of overcoming. This paper sets a goal to make clear how Kant may play these three roles in Mou's project. For this, two questions seem to be essential: first, why Mou did esteem Kant so high?; second: what were the limits of Kant Mou thought to be impediment to fully develop to the same level as Chinese Confucianism? Mou's distinction of three “meanings” of moral reason plays as a backdrop of Mou's evaluation of Kant's philosophy. After analyzing three meanings of moral reason, Mou's criticism on Kant in terms of necessity of moral sense and intuitive knowledge of moral self is discussed on the assumption that Mou misunderstood the role of moral sense in Kant on the one hand, and the distinction between empirical knowledge and ‘moral faith’ (die moralische Glaube) on the other.
