The research project explores interactions within communities on the Internet in respect of exchange system. The extant studies, mostly influenced by Mauss's notion of gift economy, have focused only on cooperative exchanges, disregarding the productive roles of conflict within communities. Acknowledging such limit of the extant discussions, the project attempts to push the boundaries of the studies on Internet community and exchange system. This project has examined the extant discussions with critical views to formulate a synthetic approach to a wide range of cooperation and conflict within communities. Drawing upon this new approach, interviews with the sysops(i.e. system operators) from ten communities in five different types on the Internet were conducted. It was subsequently disclosed that both cooperation and conflict, despite the flexible and unstable conditions inherent in the Internet, are working as resource for imaginary communities. This research finding shows that not only cooperation but conflict in social interactions systematically but dynamically (re)produce as well as (re)shape Internet communities at different conjunctures.
