It is shown that various lineage groups have different ways of operating their lineage organizations and developing lineage activities, meaning that reviewing much more cases are required for how lineage groups as a whole in Korea are working and functioning to be found.
This paper is a case study on the lineage organizations and their activities of Muan-Park lineage group residing in Dogok-ri in Chuksan-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun. Muan-Park lineage group in Dogok-ri consists of the descendants of Park Ui-jang, who is a renowned general of mid-Joseon dynasty, distinguishing himself in battles of the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. They have been residing in Dogok-ri since mid-seventeenth century. They are also recognized as one of the most high-profile lineages, making Dogok-ri one of the most representative Yangban (traditional gentry class) villages in this community.
The lineage group of Muan-Parks in Dogok-ri has its official genealogical organization called Muigongpa-jonghoi(武毅公派宗會), and also has some functional organizations such as noin-so(老人所) for taking care of the elderly, song-gye(松契) for communal use of forest resources, and sangjo-gye(相助契) for mutual aid in funeral affairs.
All the primary activities executed by them are focused on the works for their ancestors and jongga(宗家, the head family of lineage) such as ancestral worship ceremonies, administration of the ancestral tombs and the relics, the activities to honor their ancestors, and the businesses to support jongson(宗孫, the eldest grandson of the head family) and jongga, but rarely on their descendants’ development and prosperity.
This lineage organization owns some land and forests for the sake of managing ancestral worship ceremonies and the relics, with the pine mushrooms from forests being its key revenue source.
Some outstanding features of these organizations and their activities are:No prominent role is taken by jognson or munjang(門長, the elder man of the lineage). Jongson is not taking the initiative in operating the lineage organization but just a symbolic role as a master of ancestral worship ceremonies. Munjang does not have a significant presence either.
Muigongpa-jonghoi as an official genealogical organization of lineage, not jongson or munjang, is taking the lead in operating all the lineage organizations, with the jonghoi-jang(宗會長, the chief of the official organization), who is elected by the members, considered as the representative of munjung. It indicates that there has been a transformation from the traditional way of munjung management based on jongson or munjang’s initiative to modern administration through an official organization.
The management of ancestral worship ceremonies and the relics is now central to the functions of lineage groups in Korea, while ‘showing off their social prestige’, which was once understood as one of their primary functions, has been weakened considerably.
A substantial level of support is given to jongga despite jongson's little presence in the lineage group, which can be understood as resulting from the traditional notion of protecting and giving support exceptionally to jongga.
All these features appear to be influenced by the factors including jongson’s weakened leadership, economic trouble of jongga, and the shrinking property of munjung, indicating that the two elements ─jongson and the amount of munjung’s property─ play a very significant role in operating lineage organizations.
