From the view that the foundation of air transportation is a safety, this study found that Korea’s two national flag carriers, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, have several safety problems, based on safety ranks of global carriers evaluated by JACDEC(Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre); each airline is ranked at 56th and 46th, respectively, out of 60 carriers at JACDEC. To be specific, we analyzed all air accidents occurred by two flag carriers and categorized them into internal and external factors, each of which is comprised of causes for air accident, preventive measures for the safety, and follow-up measures after air accidents. And then, we suggested strategies for safety improvement in accordance with the managerial situation of each flag carrier.
Although the airlines have to take responsibilities on air safety while global alliances between them become common, this study expects for two flag carriers to figure out the preventive and solid schemes for air accidents that are likely to lead to the heavy casualties and property damages.
