(The Member of the Wedding)와 『슬픈 카페의 노래』(The Ballad of the Sad Cafe)에서 여 주인공의 몸과 젠더 불안이 당대의 프릭 문화와 관련하여 재현되는 양상을 논의하고자 한다.
Carson McCullers explores women's gender anxiety in terms of freak show culture of the 1940s's in her representative works, The Member of the Wedding and The Ballad of the Sad Cafe. The freak show and the freaks in The Member of the Wedding reflect a social ideology of projecting inappropriate negative images upon women. Facing the implicit and explicit social expectations of what it means to be a women, the Tomboyish teenage girl Franky finds her being portrayed as a hermaphrodite in a freak show. It is within this context her character reveals the anxiety of growing up as a gentle woman. The hermaphrodite freak in the exaggerated transvestism exhibited at the freak show deepens Frankie’s gender confusion. Similarly, the character Amelia in The Ballad of the Sad Cafe exposes another image of hermaphrodite freak, in whom the male and female gender exist together in conflict rather than in harmony. Through the depiction of the protagonists’ gender anxiety and frustration, the author questions the justification of heterosexuality, the concept of womanhood itself, and the social perception of the ideal femininity required for marriage.
