This paper approaches Seoul Namsan as a historical space, event-happening place, through the topic of homicide and crimes. It sees murder as a socio-cultural phenomenon, and regards Namsan mountain as a site wherein historical accidents of crime happen. This kind of approach basically relies on the historical philosophy of Benjamin, Kracauer and Bloch among others. At the same time, it is closely linked to the subaltern historiography that tries to read subversively and reveal symptomatically the oppressed voices of various (sub)jects. More concretely, in this paper, the author focuses on such urban proletariats as leftist poets, working class poors, pimps, prostitutes, housekeepers as well as mistresses. They are the subjects who have actually lived the modernizing historical period of postcolonial Seoul, dictated by capitalism and controlled by the state, but have largely been left out as the valueless object of historical description. Their life and death will be put back onto historical memory and record, by way of recovering the traces of criminals and stans of victimizations left on Namsan. The author will attempt this sort of writing, by adopting a novel-like fictive style not the rigid academic research format. This is because of his belief that 'the literal' or 'the journalistic' is better and perhaps more effective in inscribing the deleted culture of minorities back onto history and reality.
