This study aims to analyze how death-related symbols became meaningful during the rituals, focusing on the Korean Shamanistic death rituals and to understand multiple meanings of those symbols.
Death holds an absolute significance in the Korean Shamanism. Dead people are best treated through the death rituals. Symbols used during the death rites visualize to the people of this world that the dead people left this life. One of the most outstanding symbols used during the death rituals is objects that are specified and represented as the dead person. Shamans or various objects are represented as the dead person during the rituals, thereby the dead one is considered to exist in the same space where the rituals are held. It is considered that these objects visualize how the dead person goes to the next world and help the people of this world recognize that the death of their loved ones is a reality.
During the death rituals, attempts are made to free the soul of the dead person and turn it into a new being in the other world. Religious symbols visualize that the life of the dead person runs its course in this world and the soul of the dead person is made free to be reincarnated in the other world. Furthermore, the death rituals continue even after the people recognize that the dead person is already reincarnated. That’s because that the dead people can be elevated to become ancestors by receiving 상식상, or can be reborn in the next world through purification rituals, which clean the symbols of the dead people.
The dead people can reach the next world after going through several stages. The death rituals visualize borderlines, including doors, roads, bridges and rivers, which connect this world and the next world, and ships believed to lead the dead to the heaven. Symbols, including paper money, clothes and food, are included in the rituals to help the dead people continue their lives in the next world. The death rituals are considered transition rites for a temporary cut-off from family members, rather than rites for an eternal severance between the dead people and their family members. In Korean society, dead people are not forgotten or severed from their family members. The dead can no longer live together and have a close relationship with their family members, but they are invited and remembered as ‘ancestors’ during the ancestral rites and the shamanistic rituals. The death rituals use symbols to connect the two worlds and show to the family members that death is just a transitional stage, which the dead people should undergo to reach the next world. Such transition rites enable a new integration in each world.
Contrary to the dominating world-view of Confucianism that people who fail to die a good death cannot go to the heaven, shamanism grants indulgence to those who could not die a decent death and qualifies them as ancestors or ancestral gods through shamanistic rituals. The shamanistic death rituals also remove the fear of death from the family members by using symbols as the medium. In that context, the death rituals can be considered purification rituals for both the living and the dead and religious rites for continued existence.
