This study aimed to discuss both how the flower patterns, a metalanguage created in Korea, had described Korean people’s mental images and symbolic significances of the flower patterns as well. Based on what it had learned from collected data and materials, the study looked not only into how the flower patterns had been used throughout histories but also into symbolic codes of a lotus design, an apricot design, a chrysanthemum design and a peony design which were used the most frequently during the period of the Three States, the period of unified Silla, the Goryeo Dynasty and the Joseon Dynasty.
According to the results of the research, from the period of the Three States to the Goryeo Dynasty, the lotus design signified cleanliness, chastity and purification because of these influences of Buddhist culture but during the Joseon Dynasty, people used the design for praying for the fecundity. The ancients considered the apricot flower to be symbols of a noble character of a classical scholar and purity, integrity. In winter, the flower becomes leafless and seems to be withered but in a next year it blooms again that was how the apricot flower started symbolizing longevity. The chrysanthemum design was used for describing integrity, longevity and prosperity. As for the peony design, a peony would basically talk about wealth and harmony and therefore, people in the past embroidered the flower on wedding costumes, folding screens, pyebaek cloths and others.
The study analyzed how the flower patterns are being used today and found out that people are currently using the patterns only for decorating as they care the least about all those traditional significances of the patterns. This study learned about the symbolic significances which have been excluded from how the traditional Korean flower patterns would be used and prepared a foundation for any relevant fields to develop original Korean designs with contemporary design factors applied. After all, as investigating how the flower patterns are being used for contemporary designs, the study focuses on presenting what the relevant fields should pursue when they try to design using the traditional Korean flower patterns.
