This study considers location photographs that are found in online blogs as social practice that manifest the sociocultural positivity of discourse, produced through individual’s experience of space. As a result, the study selects online blog photographs of Seoul as research corpus. By selecting photographs through representative sampling and setting them as fundamental data that show Seoul’s placeness and spatial practice of living a cityscape, the study was able to find three dominant perspectives that construct landscapes of Seoul: (1) museum-like gaze that show postcard aesthetics (2) foreign-sentiment gaze that make daily lives as global spectacles (3) self-referential gaze that shows the emptiness of city space experience. This project differentiates from the sociology of photography approach that analyzes representations of space or observes sociological meaning from an individual’s photography project. It also differentiates from Cultural Analytics approach that attempts to produce new knowledge by visualizing a total set of photographs on a particular reality without theoretical reduction. This study is an experimental research project that introduces photographic images into qualitative research design on a cultural phenomenon. Also, in the aspect that the study’s research question is on spatial experience of the city of Seoul, it gained theoretical inspirations from Benjamin’s Arcade project, De Certeau’s researches on spatial practices of culture , and H. J. Kim’s research on the experience of alleys in the contemporary Korean society.
