The purpose of this study was to explore motivational aspects that comprise of physical education (PE) teachers’ participation in communities of practice (CoP). Two PE teachers and two elementary school teachers participated in this project. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in order to collect data. The data were analyzed with an inductive category analysis suggested by Corbin and Strauss (2008). A total of three themes were constructed. Firstly, the research participants participated in CoPs in order to obtain practical knowledge leading the enhancement of PE lessons. Long distances to CoP meetings and difficulties of forming rapport were barriers toward participation in CoPs. Secondly, experiencing the improvement of PE lessons, positive interaction with members, and taking important roles in CoPs led to the teachers’ continuous participation. Thirdly, flexible management of CoP, supportive environment, and retaining focus of developing pedagogies were characteristics of CoP that contributed to the teachers’ effective professional development. Based on these findings, implications for conducting future PE-CoP research are suggested.
