We perform following three tests. First, we examine how the effects of CSR(Corporate Social Responsibility) on the management risk differ between firms with different size (e. g., large firms and small-medium firms). Also, we investigate how the effects of CSR on the information asymmetry differ between firms with different size. Second, we analyze the impacts of management risk on debt capital cost between firms with different size is influenced by CSR performance. Finally, we investigate the impacts of information asymmetry on debt capital cost between firms with different size is influenced by CSR performance.
We draw an initial sample of firms listed on the Korean Stock Exchange over the period of 2006-2012. Our sample consists of 2,346 firm-years retrieved from the KIS-VALUE database. We use the KEJI (Korean Economic Justice Institute) index as a proxy of corporate social responsibility. Financial data used this study are collected from the KIS-VALUE database.
The major findings of this study are as follows. First, we find that in large firms, CSR performance decreases the management risk, and also, such a relation is found in small-medium firms. We also find that in large firms and small-medium firms, CSR performance decreases the information asymmetry. Second, the result provides that the increase of debt capital cost associated with management risk is alleviated by CSR performance in large firms and small-medium firms. Finally, we find that in large firms, the increase of debt capital cost associated with information asymmetry is not alleviated by CSR performance, however, the increase of debt capital cost associated with information asymmetry is alleviated by CSR performance in small-medium firms. This implies that debtholders tend to make into a discrimination in evaluating the alleviation of information asymmetry by CSR performance, due to the difficulty in accessing a firm’s information. Based on our findings, we conclude that CSR performance tends to decrease the management risk and the information asymmetry. We also conclude that debtholders consider CSR performance in evaluating the alleviation of management risk and information asymmetry, however, they differ between firms with different size (e. g., large firms and small-medium firms).
Our results provide a new perspective on how to alleviate information asymmetry, and to decrease management risk. The results of this study may prove helpful for the formulations of small-medium firms’ CSR strategies in terms of communication with debtholders.
