Consumers decision making process of purchasing agri-food products tend to be influenced by intrinsic factors such as consumers socio-demographics and situational factors like external shocks. This study focuses on how weather variables, as a situational factor, influence households purchase of agri-food products. We use a panel data available from the household agri-food products purchase survey conducted by Rural Development Administration(RDA), the automated synoptic observing information provided by Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA), and retail food products price data of Korea Agricultural and Fisheries Food Corporation(aT). Household panel survey collects receipts of daily purchasing agri-food products for 635 households residing at the metropolitan areas from January 2010 to December. 2015, which contains socio-economic characteristics of the panel households. We construct panel tobit models for 10 different agri-food products, respectively by defining weekly expenditures on each agri-food product as the function of weather variables and other factors. The empirical results show that these weather variables significantly influence households purchase of agri-food products, even though the impact of quantity supplied of agri-food products on their purchase being controlled. These results imply that weather related marketing strategy can be a useful tool on selling agri-food products to consumers. However, since weather conditions could affect the quality of agri-food products handled and shipped, appropriate treatments of keeping these products being fresh should be conducted as well. Additional, linking weather effects on agri-food products purchase, emphasizing healthy and psychological functionality of agri-food products can be useful strategy for promoting consumers expenditures on them.
