The number of the Japanese army had been increasing on Jeju island since the spring of 1945, the last stage of the second World War. As the battle on the land of Japan set into full swing, the weapons and troops were concentrated into Sung-san, geologically the closest to Japan, with the escalation of military tension.
This study aims at demonstrating military facilities constructed in Sung-san by the Japanese Navy, by conducting the field survey, interviews of witnesses, and analysis of historical records. According to the survey results, nineteen places of military-related facility in total are figured out in Sung-san, while two of them were used as brothels for Japanese troops. The existence of the brothel facility is confirmed by a testimony of Oh Shi-jong, a resident of Sung-san. He still clearly remembers the scene even though it has passed 70 years that Japanese soldiers belonging to ‘Yokaren Unit’, dressed up with seven buttons-on fancy military uniform, were waiting in line in front of the building.
In our humble opinion, any study or research that the brothels for the Japanese army were existed in Jeju has not been made public in the academic world. For that reason, this study leaves task that additional inquiries into people who remember the condition of Sungsan at the end of the Pacific War should be continued. Furthermore, a comparative study on how the brothels were operated in the region stationed by ‘Yokaren Unit’ under the control of the Japanese Empire is required.
