In this study, I could confirm that Yi-Ik(李瀷, 1681-1763) tried to justify the pursuit of human needs and interests in terms of universality. This meant that he tried to restore the forgotten Confucian spirit. The ‘Chun-Ha-Wi-Kong(天下爲公)’ of the Yeun(禮運) means to give the Saint the crown of the emperor. After passing through the New Confucianism of Song Dynasty, Chun-Ha-Wi-Kong became ideological ‘Chun-Li-Ji-Kong(天理之公)’. Because of this, human desires against Chun-Li-Ji-Kong were perceived as negative or unjust.
The Yulgok School insisted on the theory of social justice to strengthen its dominance according to this ideology. According to Yi-Ik, the theory of social justice claimed by the Yulgok school was never for the whole society. So he insisted that the universality of Chun-Ha-Wi-Kong is to treat all people equally without discrimination.(同仁)
What he insisted was a sustainable Universal Benefit(公利) principle of harmony and balance where all life can coexist. He defined interests(利) as “a dynamic balance of social relation in Confucian community.(義之和)” He wanted people to realize that interests were inherently of public value. The private pursuit of interests comes from the inner virtue of man. Therefore it is good and public value originated in human nature. For this reason, the pursuit of human desires and interests can be justified in accordance with universal ethical principles.
