It is relatively unknown what Ganghwa Island(= Gangwhado, 江華島) looked like for more than 150 years since modern times. In order to solve this problem, I looked through the materials related to modern Ganghwado, including historical records, literary works, travel documents of Koreans, memoirs of Ganghwa people, articles of newspapers and magazines, and travel journals of foreigners from the openning of the port to the pre-1950 period.
From the opening of the port in 1876 to the beginning of 1910, Ganghwado was a state-of-the-art area of the first Christian propagation, the formation of a religious community, and the acceptance of new civilizations. Second, Ganghwado was a cradle of modern new education and enlightenment movements based on the establishment of private schools by intellectuals. Third, Ganghwado was a place where political and social unrest and anti-Japanese resistance occurred, including the activities of the righteous army of Ganghwado in the late 1900s.
In Japanese colonial era, Ganghwado has emerged as a tourist attraction near the capital due to the Japanese colonial government's plan to encourage travel and develop tourist destinations. At this time, Korean intellectuals recognized Ganghwado as a historical cradle and named it as a place of memory that overlaps the reality and past history of the country, and predicts self-reflection and an opaque future. Ganghwado is also known to be place of affluent and rich place where the idea of not relying on land was strong and self-sufficient.
With liberation, Ganghwado had stronger hopes for social reconstruction than other regions. However, after the chaotic political situation and the Korean War, the perception that Ganghwado is a dangerous area of military tension has grown. Such eyes are still in progress.
Through modern records, it is possible to confirm that Ganghwado, which is reflected in the eyes of internal and external visitors, is recognized as a rich land, a cradle of modern education, a place of patriotism, and a place where tension and harmony coexist.
