This paper aims to grasp the current status and the scale of the Russian film industry in the post-Soviet period, and to estimate the value and the future prospects of the Russian film as a cultural industry. Especially we focus on comparing the indicators from 2013, when the Russian film market began to stagnate in earnest, to 2017, which has emerged from the stagnation period and has become a ‘record year’.
The Russian market share in the global film market is only 1.5-2%, and it cannot be said to be high compared to the US or China market share. However, Russia is currently pursuing various film promotion cooperation projects at the national level with China and India, which are attracting attention as emerging powerhouses in the modern film industry. Therefore, a reflection effect is expected accordingly.
Meanwhile, after 2016, which was named ‘The Year of Russian Film’ by the Russian government, the number of audiences and ticket sales for Russian domestic movies have been on the rise for three consecutive years. At the same time, the reputation of Russian films and the number of viewers in the international film market are also increasing. Until now, Russian films have been recognized for its artistry by being ranked at the top level in A-class international film festivals, but they have been ignored by domestic audiences. However, the increasing preference for domestic films shown by Russian domestic audiences since 2016 suggests the possibility of overcoming limitations the popularity of Russian films, apart from its artistry.
Therefore, this paper examines various issues and current status data related to the Russian film industry over the past 10 years. Based on this, the possibility of the Russian film industry in the international film market is explored. In addition, based on the analysis of the growing preference of domestic audiences for Russian films since 2016, we will point out the direction that Russian films should pay attention to in order to offset the gap between “artistry” and “popularity”. In particular, it looks at the various policy support being carried out by the Russian government and analyzes the glocality orientation observed in the modern Russian film industry.
