This study examines the pagan primitiveness of ancient Slavic peoples reproduced through the innovative composition technique of 『Rite of Spring』, composed in the period of Igor Stravinsky's primitive music. This study also explains the East Slavic mythology that provided the prototype of the primitiveness.
Stravinsky artistically reproduces East Slavic pagan rituals through primitive music in 『Rite of Spring』. At the same time, he created innovative music that was completely different from the traditional Western music of the previous era. In particular, among the transformative and original musical characteristics of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, the most important is the use of a new rhythm. And another element that preserves the characteristics of the original music of 『The Rite of Spring』 is the chromatic melody. Stravinsky uses chromatic melodies in his experimental music. Its melody creates a grotesque atmosphere, creating an eerie atmosphere in the ancient pagan world.
