A Study on the Opera The Temple of the Doll by Kim Cheon-Wook Based on the Libretto by Shin Young-Sun- Centered on Libretto -
The opera The Temple of the Doll by composer Kim Cheon- Wook based on the libretto by the author Shin Young-Sun was selected as the ‘2018 Performing Arts Creation Center - New Work of the Year’ operated by the Arts Council Korea and premiered at the Guro Art Valley Art Theater on March 8-9, 2019. It was recognized for its workability by winning ‘The Grand Prize in the Creative Category’ of ‘The 2019 12th Korea Opera Awards.’ This opera was created through close collaboration between the composer and the author from the initial stage of conception to the completion of the work. It is a work created by reinterpreting the story of the Trojan War, which is the central subject of Greek mythology and tragedy, which is a rare Korean opera.
This paper is the first stage study of the opera The Temple of the Doll, which was planned in two stages, and examined the composition and characteristics of the libretto. The libretto of the opera The Temple of the Doll embraces the recited language of a traditional Korean poet and makes use of the unique musicality and rhythm of Korean language. It examines how the techniques, structures, and formal composition of Greek tragedies, such as symmetry and contrast principles, circular configuration, sandwich configuration, and stichomythia, are accepted in the form and development of characters, conflict structures, and dramatic events. The chorus of the last Greek ending serves as a commentator who allows the audience to reflect on the theme and meaning of the work.
