The purpose of this study is to establish the direction, scope and research method of the longitudinal study on gifted education in arts considering the characteristics and research environment of the artistic giftedness different from those of mathematics and science. Twenty-seven experts in the field of music and fine arts, which have conducted relatively many basic studies for gifted education, were selected to investigate and analyze opinions on the purpose, contents, methods and various matters of the longitudinal study. Based on the analysis results, the study proposed ideas for the design of the longitudinal study on gifted education in arts. The purpose and direction of the longitudinal study on gifted education in arts is to identify the development process, characteristics, and factors of artistically gifted students and validate the performance of the education. As a research content, it has been proposed to examine the multi-faceted aspects for comprehensive understanding of artistic giftedness, which are also related to Gagné's differentiated model of giftedness and talent. The proposed research method is to conduct a 25-year cohort panel study for a holistic understanding of the gifted in arts. In order to enable the implementation of such longitudinal studies, environmental conditions such as legal grounds and institutional devices, securing professional research personnel, ensuring financial support and research independence, and compliance with research ethics should be formed.
