While the seriousness of stalking and gaslighting that occur in intimate relationships is getting more recognized in our society, not much research has been done on them. Thus, this study is aimed at identifying the definitions and current situations of these behaviors looking into perpetrators’ psychological characteristics, including the strategies and tactics they employ. There was a significant difference in criminal intent and psychological backgrounds between gaslighters and stalkers. For instance, while gaslighters take advantage of victims for their personal gain and display a high level of psychopathic and narcissistic traits, stalkers tend to crave for a romantic relationship with victims and have erotomania characterized by delusional beliefs and borderline personality. Another significant difference was also shown in the impacts on the victims. It is likely that victims of gaslighting suffer from difficulties in making normal judgments and depression and victims of stalking show post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and hypersensitivity. Therefore, in light of the graveness of their impacts on the society, judicial regulations to control such threatening behaviors and efforts to present the improvement are required.
