The present study aims to explore the difficulties and needs of instructors teaching online in early childhood education during the COVID-19 pandemic. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight instructors in Early Childhood Education who abruptly started online classes in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the interview contents were analyzed using a qualitative research method. As a result of this study, the difficulties of online classes reported by the instructors in Early Childhood Education were 'disagreement between instructors and students on online teaching methods,' 'passive class participation of students,' 'insufficient video materials related to early childhood education,' 'limitation of simulation class,' 'limited function of the live-streaming online lecture platform,' and 'heavy class burden.' Facing these difficulties, the instructors in Early Childhood Education requested support for 'training on strategies to enhance students' class participation,' 'sharing how to apply online simulation class,' 'providing video materials related to play-centered curriculum,' 'educating students on online class attitudes,' and 'research on the application of online classes in the Early Childhood Education Department.' This study suggests the need to prepare for providing high-quality online classes suitable for the specificity of teaching pre-service early childhood teachers by examining the difficulties and needs of instructors teaching online in early childhood education.
