The issue of North Korean settlement in South Korea has been widely discussed in terms of economic situation and social adaption. However, challenges and difficulties North Koreans face in everyday lives tend to be underestimated, and complex social interactions with local people in a host country on a micro-level have not been analyzed in depth. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the detailed social interactions between North and South Koreans focusing on the social and spatial environment around a particular elementary school(A) based on qualitative research data. Elementary school A is located at the center of an affluent area in Seoul, a good school district where many middle-class parents choose to live despite high real-estate prices. Around the 2010s, however, a significant number of North Korean families were allocated council houses in this area, causing numerous issues in the community. The A elementary school, as the liminal space of new comers and middle-class settlers, unfolds unforeseen challenges and new possibilities.
