This paper examined various aspects that function as a channel for cultural exchange through the confrontations, conflicts, and the process of resolving conflicts in the Incheon sea area due to the characteristic of border during the early and prosperous maritime period.
First, Michuhol was examined from the perspective of the origin of the Incheon maritime forces in the early Baekje period, and Daejin and Neungheodae were seen from the perspective of the birthplace of border characteristic in the Incheon sea area. Daejin is the indented place between Munhaksan Mountain and Cheongryangsan Mountain, and Neungheodae was located in the current Okryeon Park area at the west end of Munhaksan Mountain.
Next, Gwanmiseong Fortress was identified as a place where King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo took over in the late 4th century to secure a maritime bridgehead to advance to Baekje. Gwanmiseong Fortress was the scene where the conflict of border between the two countries exploded, and it was presumed as the Odusan Mountain, which protrudes as the topography of the Cape at the point where the Han River and the Imjin River merge.
As it turned into the East Asian War in the 7th century, Deokjeokdo Island in the Incheon sea area emerged as a key transit point for Tang’s naval force to cross the Yellow Sea, representing the sense of urgency of the East Asian border. Sojeongbang of Tang’s General crossed the Yellow Sea with naval force and transferred to Deokjeokdo Island in 660 and Son In-sa in 662 (or 663), so Deokjeokdo Island seems to have been a bridgehead for the formation of the Silla-Tang Allied Forces and attacking Baekje. By the late 7th century, the East Asian War had turned into the Silla-Tang War. At this time, Cheonseong became the scene where the conflict of East Asian border reached its peak as a blood clot broke out between the leader of Tang’s naval force trying to land and the coastal guard of Silla trying to block it.
The war ended when the Silla-Tang War ended in Silla’s victory. And from the 8th century, after a certain period of deliberation, peaceful cultural exchange between Tang, Silla, and Japan was activated. The waters of Incheon have emerged as the core of maritime exchanges in East Asia, breaking away from the dark history of the previous conflicts and confrontations of border.
According to Gatam’s Sea Road, Deokjeokdo Island was located as a key road for the crossing of the Yellow Sea and the West Sea, and Ganghwado Island and Gyodongdo Island also played a significant role as a base island for coastal sea routes from Shandong Peninsula to Dangeunpo port. In addition, according to Seogeung’s sea route we can feel the vitality of Incheon Sea. In particular, Yeongjongdo Island (at that time, Jayeondo Island) was equipped with an accommodation called Gyeongwonjeong, so the group of envoys stayed here and prepared to pass through the high-flowing area called “Geupsumun” located between Ganghwado Island and Gimpo. Gyeongwon, which means the source of the good things, was considered to reflect the situation in which Lee family of Inju (or Gyeongwon) represented by Lee Ja-gyeom, grew rapidly as a marine force during the Goryeo Dynasty.
