In the 14th century, the blue and white porcelain of Jingdezhen is a new variety that emerged in the late Yuan Dynasty market and is regarded as a symbol of Yuan Dynasty’s ceramic culture. Nevertheless, looking at actual literature records and excavated patterns, the imperial family of the Yuan Dynasty did not value ceramic production, and the use in the court was also insufficient. Rather, it used Cizhou Kiln(磁州窯) porcelain, which could be easily procured in the northern region, as a storage container, and preferred bowls made of gold, silver, jade, and agate for daily tableware. Although the Fuliang Porcelain Office(浮梁磁局) was set up in Jingdezhen, it did not produce porcelain professionally, such as producing other handicrafts such as lacquerware and hats besides porcelain at a low level of 9th grade. The main role of the Fuliang Porcelain Office is considered to be the supply of vessels for the ancestral rites of the original imperial family.
However, production of blue and white porcelain increased rapidly around the Zhizheng Reign(至正年間, 1341-1367), and along with active exports, a change in consumption of blue and white porcelain was spreading among the upper classes in China. Of course, the attitude of the Yuan Dynasty’s imperial family toward ceramics has not changed much, but it seems that they consumed ceramics in the form of government trade instead. Today, a large amount of Jingdezhen blue and white porcelain from Western Asia, such as Turkey and Iran, is a case in point, and it is estimated that the upper class, including the Yuan Dynasty’s imperial family, actively participated in the ceramic trade, in partnership with Ortoq, a non-Mongol foreigners (semu, 色目) merchant at the time.
The fact that blue and white porcelain was used as an important “tools” in the profit-seeking activities of the upper class would have been the main background for the production of blue and white porcelain in the Yunnan Province, where cobalt pigments were produced in the late Yuan Dynasty. The expansion of the southern ceramics industry, triggered by blue and white porcelain, seems to have affected the production of Blue and white porcelain in Vietnam, which was bordered by Yunnan Province. In particular, Vietnam also had to learn how to use it because it imported cobalt pigments from Jingdezhen (pigments imported from West Asia) and local pigments Zhumingliao[珠明料] from Yunnan Province to produce a new variety called ‘blue and white porcelain’. And this would have been resolved through human exchange. In fact, it is believed that the influence of Yuxi kiln (玉溪窯)and Jianshui kiln(建水窯), which are kilns in Yunnan Province, had a certain level of influence on the production of Vietnamese blue and white porcelain. Therefore, attention is paid to the role of a significant number of Muslims who settled in Yunnan after the conquest of the Islamic world by the Mongol Empire. Given the possibility that a group of Muslim artisans who can handle cobalt pigments, which are very familiar in the Islamic world, may have participated in the Fuliang Porcelain Office in Jingdezhen, Yunnan and Vietnam also cannot rule out the spread of technology through them.
