Recently, some composers have begun to include ASMR sound in their works. This paper examines the music using ASMR sound ― I will call it ASMR music in this article ― in conjunction with musique concrète. The purpose of this article is to delve into present aspects of electroacoustic music, developed in the mid20th century, through ASMR, one example of contemporary sound culture. For this, I examine the compositional method of musique concrète and ASMR music respectively, and then analyze their commonalities and differences. Finally I reveal the change of the listening experience according to different compositional methods. Both musique concrète and ASMR music record everyday sounds and make them audible by devices such as loud speakers. But they are differentiated in terms of compositional method and listening experience. In musique concrète, the recorded sounds are distorted through such techniques as acceleration, expansion, and segmentation. In this case, listeners perceive a musical structure comprised of abstract sounds themselves. However, in ASMR music, listeners feel the physical properties of ‘expanded’ small sounds, not separated from their context, transmitted by loud speakers. Thus ASMR music represent recent listening culture, experiencing certain sounds physically before logically grasping them as a part of overall musical structure.
