We have often observed foreign direct investment (FDI) risks that stem from information asymmetry and opportunism since the financial crisis. In order to offset the risk, we need trust among concerned parties, and it has become more important than anything else. In this study, the trust triangular model was applied to analyze the influence of institutional environment in three aspects: the legal, the market, and the cultural institutional environments. In addition, an empirical analysis was conducted on 10 countries that participated in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (CPTPP) from 2005 to 2019, based on data from Outward FDI (OFDI) in Korea. The results of the empirical analysis are as follows. First, the favorable institutional environment of the host country has a positive effect on Korea's OFDI. Second, the impacts of market institutional environments are larger to developing economies than advanced countries. In contrast, legal institutional environments heavily affect advanced countries more than developing economies. Third, as a result of additionally verifying the effect of the institutional environment on OFDI, it was found that there were complementary and facilitating effects among the three institutional environments. Finally, the presence of FTA moderates the relationships between market and cultural institutions, whereas it does not moderate the associations between legal institutions and inward FDI. This study is expected to contribute to FDI theory and strategies for OFDI.
