Along with the North Star, the Old Man of the South Pole(南極老人星) is the main object of star worships in East Asia. Over the course of history, the Old Man of the South Pole, recognized as a star of longevity, gradually took on a anthropomorphic form and also became an object of popular worship for the masses. The worship of the Old man of South Pole has not been monopolized by any one religion. Nevertheless, it has the strongest Daoist characteristics.
This paper examines how Daoist deities related the Old man of the South Pole were represented in Daoist scriptures, rituals, and doctrines, and how the explanation of them transformed and developed. It also examines how Daoist doctrines and salvation theories influenced the later images of the Old man of the South Pole as a formalized anthropomorphic deity. Furthermore, it examines how Daoist elements in the image of it influence the persrpectives on the elderly in East Asia.
