This study regards internationalization as expansion in the stakeholder boundary, and investigates the relationship between local business network and the governance structure during the internationalization process. Specifically, we examine the effects of interlocking board network on foreign ownership, approaching from the network theory. We hypothesize a U-shaped relationship between centrality and foreign ownership because foreign investors may prefer a lower level of centrality, compared with the middle level, for the lower local resistance to the influx of foreign investors or a higher level for more visible local access. We also hypothesize an inverted U-shaped relationship between brokerage and foreign investments because foreign investors may avoid the firms with the peripheral position on the local network or firms in the over-utilization position. We make our research setting in the high-tech industries of Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), where the globalization wave occurred in the 2010s. Our panel dataset consists of 351 listed private firms during 2012-2017. Results based on the fixed-effects analysis and the two-stage least square analysis support our hypotheses. Overall, we demonstrate that the effects of centrality and brokerage are not uniform on influx of the foreign investments into the private, high-tech firms in Taiwan.
