This article aims to estimate the employment size of engineer group and analyze its relative employment effects by operationally defining the engineer group at the 3 digit level of occupational classification in the manufacturing industry using data from the 2008∼2021 Regional Employment Survey. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the employment size of the manufacturing engineer group is between 41.4 and 46.5 thousand, and the share is between 12.9% and 15.4%. The size and share of engineer employment varies widely by industry, with the processing and assembly industry accounting for more than two-thirds of manufacturing engineer employment, so engineer employment is highly concentrated in this sector. Second, considering both static and dynamic models of the relative employment effects of the engineer group, we find a consistent positive relative employment effect of globalization proxied by trade and foreign direct investment. On the other hand, the R&D intensity variable is not statistically significant and the patent holdings per firm variable is statistically significant only in the dynamic model, suggesting that the hypothesis of skill-biased technological change may be partially accepted. Thus, the hypothesis of skill-enhancing trade through the complementary interaction of trade and technological change is confirmed partially in the dynamic model.
