This paper focuses on examining the civic educational value of republicanism after understanding republicanism by age from the perspective of moral education. Ancient Aristotle and Cicero secured civil liberties through mixed government and promoted prosperity and common good of the city through the rule of law. Modern Machiavelli emphasized that turmoil and conflict between classes can rather promote peace and freedom in the city, and Rousseau tried to achieve civil and social freedom through the general will. contemporary Sandel insists on civic republicanism that citizens should have opportunities to actively participate in politics by activating autonomous activities. Viroli emphasizes civic virtue and patriotism for the promotion of freedom while presenting a republican concept of freedom that is distinct from liberalism and democracy. Finally, Pettit systematizes the concept of republican freedom in the contemporary sense of freedom of non-domination, while arguing that republicanism can be completed through the compatibility of the empire of law and constitutional democracy, and virtue as a civil check. Through the arguments of these scholars, this paper will confirm that the core of republicanism lies in the achievement of freedom based on mixed government and the rule of law, and that citizens' virtue, solidarity, and patriotism are required for this.
