The purpose of this article is to examine Park Yong-gu’s (1914-2016) music critique, Music and Reality (1949), and analyze his writings on Western music.
In the 1980s and 1990s, a period in which there was a ban on North Korean musicians and artists, Park work to restored a lost history, representing the period of Japanese colonial rule and the liberation space, and became an important ‘living history’ of national music theory. Therefore, the 1998 recovery of Music and Reality seemed like a restoration of Park Yong-gu and his experiences. It was a moment when Park re-emerged as the ‘surface’ of history. However, his interest in and writing about Western music, which he had meticulously examined for modern music and ethnic music planning, has often been ignored. Therefore, through this study, we examined Park Yong-gu’s gaze and the other perspectives that are not manifest in Music and Reality.
For Park, modern music was something that had to have a ‘national sentiment’ and ‘globality.’ In order to accomplish this, he emphasized that he “faced the need to look back on the journey of Western music and review the method of ingesting it.” Park Yong-gu’s writing and publishing about Western music continued even after Music and Reality. These texts occupied one of the popular Western music commentary documents at the time, took responsibility for the ‘era of culture,’ and functioned as texts of silent reading that reproduced without the actual sound (performance) of Western music. However, in the existing research on Park or the history of music criticism, the performance of writing introducing Western music and writing has not been studied. Therefore, through the re-reading of Music and Reality, we will reexamine Park Yong-gu’s critical work and discuss how his gaze on Western music is related to the making of national music.
