The aboveground sections of Line 1 and the Central Line in the metropolitan area, though situated in older urban areas, have seen an increase in pedestrian traffic and complexity due to recent station-centric developments. This necessitates significant pedestrian environment enhancements. In particular, the Hoegi station area, intersected by the Line 1 and the GyeonguiCentral Line, is spatially disconnected due to underground railway tracks and station buildings.
This region houses three universities, a general hospital, and alleyway markets. With accelerated development around Hoegi station, there’s a growing congestion on pedestrian paths, reduced pedestrian safety, and an increase in vehicular traffic, smart mobility, and two-wheelers. While there’s a mounting demand for pedestrian environment improvements from residents and other users, empirical data for such enhancements are lacking. This study aims to analyze the pedestrian environment around Hoegi station using user-centric empirical data and to propose improvement directions. Methods such as user journey mapping, shadowing techniques, in-depth interviews, and resident-participatory workshops were employed to analyze the target area and build regional data on the walking environment. Subsequently, issues and improvement directions were classified for the pedestrian path from Hoegi station to Kyung Hee University, and priorities for future projects were suggested. Analysis distinguished users into major roadside walkers and alleyway users. The former identified issues like roadside smokers, signal-violating motorcycles, and fast-moving vehicles, while the latter found threats from mixed-use paths, noise from vehicles and motorcycles, and the coexistence of parked vehicles on walking paths. Suggestions were made for smart walking paths, shared parking to address parking issues, and enhancing the image of deteriorated walking paths to enhance safety and comfort for pedestrians.
