The purpose of this study was to examine how parental beliefs affect young children’s self-esteem based on their gender and age. The subjects of the study were 220 young children and their 404 parents (208 mothers, 196 fathers). To measure these main constructs, 'Parental Beliefs Scale for Parents of Young Children' and 'Self-Esteem Scale for Young Children' were used. The results of this study were as follows. First, mothers’ and fathers' parental beliefs were the highest in children's nature and the lowest in parental role. In addition, the self-esteem of young children was higher in girls than in boys, which was the highest in 3-year-olds, followed by 4- and 5-year-olds. Second, boys' self-esteem (with respect to gender) and 3-year-olds’ and 5-year-olds’ self-esmeem (with respect to age) were partially significantly correlated with parental beliefs of both mothers’ and fathers’. Third, examination of the effect of parental beliefs on children's self-esteem by gender and age revealed: 1) mothers' beliefs in children’s development and fathers' beliefs in parental role affected boys' self-esteem; 2) father's beliefs in parental role had an effect on the self-esteem of the 3-year-olds; and 3) mother's beliefs in children’s nature had an effect on the self-esteem of the 5-year-olds. These results, which showed distinct patterns based on children’s gender and age, suggest that parental support should vary according to children’s gender and age to foster higher self-esteem.
