This study aimed to implement ‘Music Education for Young Children based on Musical Concepts’ during teacher training and to assess its impact on the understanding of musical concepts. The participants included 97 undergraduate students, majoring in early childhood education at colleges in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. They took the 'Music Education for Young Children' class in the first semester of 2021 and 2022. The course content was developed by analyzing literature related to music education, and the effect of ‘Music Education for Young Children based on Musical Concepts’ was evaluated through pre-tests and post-tests using ‘The Test for Preservice Early Childhood Teachers' Understanding of Musical Concepts’. The results of the study are as follows: before the course (pre-test), the preservice early childhood teachers had a low level of understanding of tone color, beat, rhythm, and dynamics, while their understanding of tempo, pitch, melody, and harmony was high. There was significant variation in the level of understanding among these musical concepts. After completing the course (post-test), the level of understanding of all eight musical concepts had significantly improved, and the deviation in understanding between these concepts was reduced. A comparison of pre-test and post-test results showed statistically significant changes in understanding for tone, beat, rhythm, dynamics, melody, and harmony. These findings suggest that ‘Music Education for Young Children based on Musical Concepts’ has a positive effect on enhancing the understanding of musical concepts among preservice early childhood teachers.
