As a composer who has constructed her musical world in the Western music-cultural scene, Unsuk Chin (1961-) stands among those who are relatively more oriented on ‘new style of music creation’ rather than ‘Western tradition up to the 19th century’ in terms of genre, based on the number of her works. This article investigates Chin’s approach to the traditional toccata genre by analyzing her Piano Etude No. 5 ‘Toccata,’ a piece falling into the latter category. Tracing back to the early toccatas of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, this article examines the stylistic origins of Chin’s ‘Toccata.’ It also discusses Chin’s reinterpretation of the toccata in the 21st century, particularly in terms of perpetuum mobile (infinite/continuous mobility), a consistent feature of the genre of toccata. The analysis delves into how temporal elements, such as rhythm, meter, and polymeter, function as driving forces for perpetuum mobile. It also explores the contribution of articulation and dynamics, which, in conjunction with these temporal elements, generate multi-layered textures. Furthermore, the discussion extends to explore the formal-structural significance of these various elements.
