《A Splash of Color》, composed by Dennis Alexander (b. 1947-), is a piano solo collection that combines color and music to evoke students’ synaesthetic imagery. The three volumes, which are composed at an intermediate level, contain a total of 18 piano pieces each encompassing unique emotions of the colors presented in their titles. This study aimed to discover Alexander’s distinctive musical grammar used to express the emotions of colors. To achieve this goal, the research involved the analysis of 《A Splash of Color》 and interviews with the composer using e-mail. According to the research findings, Alexander used 11 different colors (pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, white, black, gray, and gold) in 18 pieces. He not only used intrinsic names of colors but also derived titles from materials matched with the emotions of those colors, such as nature, food, metals, and music genres. The study revealed that Alexander expressed the distinctive emotions correlate with each color indicated in the titles through the following musical elements: By employing 1) Selective use of various scales, not only major and minor, but also mode, whole-tone scale, chromatic scale, bitonality, atonality, and blues scale, 2) Application of modern harmonic vocabulary, including Romantic and jazz style music, and 3) Selection of musical elements that reflect the characteristics of color and materials(meter, rhythm, articulation, tempo, expression mark, register, and dynamic), he effectively conveyed the distinct emotions of the colors mentioned in the titles of each piece. The result of this research will serve as valuable resources for performers of this piece by helping them in interpreting the work with imagination. Furthermore, it is expected these results will inspire those exploring ideas for educational works using non-musical elements.
