Han Yong-Un's, Manhae was born as Han Eung-Jun's second son in Hongsung of Chungchongnamdo in 1897. The period which he lived was official-feudal system. The Chosun dynasty had pursued the realization of Confucian-royal politics in its beginning, but it lost its activity long ago. Chosun dynasty had got old and infirmed severly with its politicians' rottenness and corruption. Manhae was born in this period surrounding, and he grew, studying Chinese classics regularly from six years in the schoolhouse of his hometown.
But people little remember the fact that he took a part in the Buddhism deeply and his various literary activity was begun from the chinese classics in his childhood. His Korean poetry is widely recited, on the other hand the study and learning activity of his Chinese poetry is not satisfactory.
This researcher has taken charge of the education of Korean language. Thinking about the men fighting against their country's danger and confusion, and giving up their life willingly, on the spot of education I asked myself "Can I do such a thing?" and has educated my students with the respect on their mental practice.
Manhae who this researcher has studied also is one of such a men. Teaching my students Korean poetry, I has thought that his ideal background was based on his life as a Buddhist priest and the Declaration of Korean independence in 1919. But I realized that the superiority of his Korean poetry is based on his Chinese classics. The focus of this study lies in observing the contribution of his knowledge about chinese poems and chinese classics.
Above all, it is important to investigate a period background, his life and his thought widely in order to know the relation of his life and literature. He had lived in the period of crash and confusion. There were agony, confliction and pray through his all life. In related to such a thing, his thought was formed with Korean history as a nationalist, an independence mover and a national poet.
Manhae's Chinese poetry is about two times more than his Korean poetry, and about 170 poems have been handed down. In his Chinese poetry a chinese quatrain is much more than a style of verse. A style of verse is suitable to condense impromptu emotion as a style of a short poem. Most of his Chinese poetry is a style of verse, which suggests indirectly that his Chinese poetry was expressed momently in the process of his life. Most of his Chinese poetry is about persons, singing homesickness of his country and singing the sadness of losing his country. He wrote his Chinese poetry in temples or a jail, and the materials of his Chinese poetry is composed of very various things such as characters, the things in nature. This suggests that he had written Chinese poetry through his all life, and that he had learned the knowledge of Chinese classics from his childhood.
This writer divided Manhae's poems into the form of subject and the form of material, and then I studied after dividing the subject into 1) solitude and the emotion of longing, 2) the sadness about the loss of national rights, 3) the aspiration of his country's independence, etc. Following that, I investigated the symbolic materials of a Japanese apricot, a chrysanthemum, a bamboo and a pine-tree. As the result of observing the character of material and subject, the world of his Chinese poetry involves ideal world more than his Korean poetry, and it is the important world of his works without being able to be passed over in the history of our Korean literature, too.
I investigated Chinese poetry and Korean poetry in the way of the metaphor and the symbol, and in the way of the relationship in materials and poetic words. His Korean poetry was written in the skill of metaphor, on the other hand his Chinese poetry was written in the skill of symbol. In the way of material and poetic word, his Korean poems are limited to sir or you, but his Chinese poems are various. But we can understand this classification, considering the spatial background of creating.
His Chinese poetry which is formed through the practical period got out its fixed form and carried into a liberal poem, though his liberal poetry was begun from 1918. This fact deserves to be emphasized. Not estimating Han Yong-Un for only the beauty of his Korean modern poetry, I expect that Manhae can greatly be estimated again as the fact that he had the disposition of a patriot and practiced it willingly through his Chinese classics. Furthermore, never thinking him as only a priest, we must keep in mind the fact that being a priest was based on his Confucian knowledge. In addition to such a thing, I expect that the education of the literature related with a poem can be done after researching his Chinese poetry written through his all life.
