This thesis studies whether the doctrine of Trinity is compatible with the feminist theology which pursues women's full humanity and gender equality, or the doctrine of Trinity impedes such a feminist theological pursuit. For this objective, first, I dealt with feminist theological studies on the Trinity before Johnson and LaCugna. Secondly, I tried to clarify how Johnson's and LaCugna's feminist theological studies on the Trinity are consturcted, and what they contribute to modern systematic theology. Thirdly, I made efforts to find out what feminist theological and practical imports those two studies have on the Korean feminist theological circle and church women.
In chapter Ⅲ, I critically analyzed Johnson's study on the Trinity, especially in what philosophical and theological backgrounds her language approach and analogy are constructed, and what limits they have. I clarified in what backgrounds she selected the feminist theological language, sophia, and how she interpreted it feminist theologically. Discussing how Johnson's sophia Trinity is constructed, what traits it has, I argued that Johnson's sophia trinity has limits in terms of relation with Isis, sophia christology and createdness of sophia. In addition, I analyzed that Johnson's trinity has some similarities with J. Moltmann's social trinity regarding relationality, friendship, perichoresis, feminist theological interpretation of God, world and creation, as well as emphasis on the Holy Spirit, and feminist, ecological theological features.
In chapter Ⅳ, I critically analyzed how LaCugna's Trinity is constructed with her special emphasis on its practicality. I traced how LaCugna criticized Rahner's Rule and developed her own rule of indivisibility of theologia and oeconomia. In other words, I evaluated how she modified Rahner's frame of inner and outer Tinity, made a frame of a chiastic model of emanation and return, exitus and reditus, and constructed soteriology-centered Trinity. In addition to this, I critically studied how LaCugna drew some features from the Eastern Tradition, particularly the Cappadocian fathers' and John Zizioulas' Trinity of relation and person, after deconstructing the Trinitarian theologies of both Eastern and Western Churches regarding the relation between theologia and oeconomia. From these backgrounds LaCugna constructed a relational ontology of the Trinity with emphasis on person. I discussed what impacts LaCugna' Trinity has regarding feminist theological, practical imports, relations between the Eastern and Western Churches, and similarities with J. Moltmann's Trinity.
In chapter Ⅴ, I summarized my study and attempted to co-relate Johnson's Trinity with LaCugna's Trinity, clarifying contributions and limits of the two, and drawing similarities and differences between the two. Johnson's sophia Trinity is a feminist theological criticism and reconstruction of the traditional Trinity, and an attempt of corelation between traditional theology and feminist theology. Its significant import lies in the fact that it, as a language approach to the Trinity, posed a problem of male-centeredness of God language and it tried to solve the problem by retrieving feminist language. But I pointed out that Johnson's approach remains focused on the language, falling short of dealing with the historical and real aspects of the God, Trinity.
LaCugna made contributions to the systematic theology by critically analyzing traditional Trinitarian theologies, and constructing soteriology-centered Trinity, therefore, in terms of feminist theological criticism and reconstruction of systematic theology. And I made it clear that LaCugna's relational ontological approach has a strong point in perceiving three divine hypostases as persons-in-communion, not as one independent, self-sufficient substance in a metaphysical substance ontology. But I argued that LaCugna's approach, especially its abstract and static ontology should be critically overcome.
In the Korean context, most Korean churches show very conservative and patriarchal opinions on the problem of maleness of God, Trinity. In addition to that, many Korean women are facing tough problems of survival, sexual discrimination, and alienation resulting from world economy of neo-liberalism with its emphasis on growth and competition. Under these circumstances, I argued that Johnson's language approach should be developed to be reflecting problems of world capitalism in close relations with which Korean church and society are placed, and including women's problems, not remaining focused only on the language of the three divine persons. Also, I maintained that LaCugna's relational ontology should be overcome to be a dynamic ontology reflecting rapidly changing reality of the Korean church and society in intimate connections with world capitalism.
