This study is designed to look over the process of the 'Guaireno' othering as a local group by Paraguayans.
Latin America has taken a different phase of ethnicity in contrast to ethnicity in the 'new states' of Africa and Asia where they became independent after the World War II. It is likely to assume that each region has undergone through distinctive colonial experience.
The 'new states' where mixed-blood of colonist and the native was not established, the native became the dominant subject of nationalism. These natives were contributed to bring independence from the imperialist, maintaining their nationality after gaining independence from the imperialist.
Unlike the 'new states,'the ethnicity of 'indio' in Latin America collapsed due to the establishment of mixed-blood of colonist and the native; the reason why 'indio' could not became the subject of nationalism. Instead, the Creole, descendents of the imperialist, held fast to the colonial province and advanced to establish new regions for themselves.
The othering of 'Guaireno' started as European immigrants began settling in Villarrica, home to 'Guaireno'. It was the war, "Grand War(Guerra Grande)", broken out in 1865 that brought European immigrants to Villarrica in a drove. After losing the war, Paraguay, suffering from population shortage and the intervention on its internal affairs by war winners led by Argentina, had to allow foreigners to freely move in and out of the country. After the war, railways were constructed on the British capital and Villarrica became a trade center resulting in big inflows of foreigners.
Foreign immigrants seized the 'Guaireno' community on the strength of their advanced capital and represented the 'Guaireno'. From that time on, Paraguayans started calling Villarrica "City of Foreigners" and began to categorize 'Guairenos' as a special group of people. As categorized, Guairenos stood against the ruling power and launched "Civil War(Guerra Civil)" (1947) and "Guerrilla Warfare(Movimiento 14 del Mayo)" (1959) and were ideologically othered by Paraguayans.
