국내의 경우, 대부분의 아파트건물은 벽식구조로 건설된다. 벽식구조는 높이에 비해 벽체두께가 얇아 높은 형상비를 갖는다. 이는 화재 시 콘크리트 벽체 내부로 고온의 열이 급격히 전달될 수 있음을 의미하며 이로 인하여 벽체 구성 재료의 열화와 함께 벽체의 궁극적인 붕괴를 초래할 수 있음을 의미한다. 최근에 초고층 아파트 또는 주상복합의 건설과 함께 고강도 콘크리트가 사용되고 있다. 이로 인하여 화재 시 심각한 폭열현상이 우려되어 이에 대한 연구 필요성이 증가하고 있다.
화재에 노출된 벽체에 대한 이론적 또는 실험적 연구는 매우 제한적으로 진행되었으며 이들 연구는 또한 한쪽 벽체면이 화재에 노출된 경우에 한하여 진행되었다.
이 연구에서는 양면이 화재에 노출된 벽체의 구조적 거동을 실험 및 이론연구를 통하여 규명함에 있다. 이 연구의 구제적 목적은 다음과 같다: 1) 화재 시 중심 축하중을 받는 철근 콘크리트 벽체의 구조적 거동에 대한 추가 실험 자료 제시; 2) 화재 시 벽체 거동을 모사할 수 있는 이론 모델 개발; 3) 벽체에 대한 내화시간 예측식 개발.
실험을 통하여 양면이 화재에 노출된 콘크리트 벽체의 경우 벽체 두께와 양생조건에 따라 완전붕괴, 심각한 화해, 그리고 세시간 이상 내화성능을 가질 수 있음이 관찰되었다.
벽체 두께가 100mm 이거나 150mm 인 경우 완전붕괴가 발생하였다. 이들 벽체의 경우 상대적으로 단기간 양생되었거나 또는 고강도 콘크리트로 제작되었다. 다른 벽체들은 부분적 폭열이 발생하거나 또는 전혀 폭열이 발생하지 않은 상태에서 180 분의 내화성능을 나타내었다.
화재 실험에 의하면 벽체 수직변위는 두 경향을 나타내었다: 초기 팽창 후 수축; 지속적인 팽창. 과도한 폭열에 따른 급격한 내부온도 상승으로 인하여 벽체 단면이 심각하게 손상을 받은 경우에 벽체 수축이 관찰되었다.
화재 시 일정한 축하중을 받는 벽체의 가열 시간에 따른 축변위를 모사할 수 있는 이론 모델을 열전달 모델, 폭열 모델, 고온에서의 콘크리트와 철근의 기계적 거동을 고려한 이론모델에 근거하여 개발하였다. 개발된 모델은 화재 시 벽체의 거동을 잘 모사하였다. 이론 모델에 의하면 벽체의 내화성능은 벽체두께와 벽체의 공칭축내력에 대한 축하중비의 영향을 가장 많이 받는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 콘크리트의 압축강도, 수직 철근비, 콘크리트 피복두께는 벽체의 내화성능에 거의 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다.
개발된 모델을 이용하여 벽체의 내화시간을 예측할 수 있는 실용식을 개발하였다. 이 식은 벽체 두께와 벽체 공칭축내력에 대한 축하중비의 함수로서 벽체의 내화성능을 예측하는 실용식으로 사용될 수 있다.
개발된 실용식에 따른 내화성능과 ACI 217-6 및 EUROCODE 2 에 제시된 내화성능을 비교하였다. ACI 217-6 의 경우 벽체두께만을 내화성능 산정 시 변수로 채택하고 있다. 이는 화재 시 벽체가 받고 있는 하중영향을 무시함으로 말미암아 부정확한 내화성능을 초래할 수 있다. 벽체 내력에 대한 축하중 크기와 무관하게 모든 경우에 대하여 개발된 실용식은 EUROCODE 2 에 의한 내화성능에 비하여 더 큰 값을 나타냈다. 실용식에 의한 내화성능(TR)에 감소계수 α=0.79 을 곱하여 수정할 경우 EUROCODE 2 에 의한 벽체 내화성능과 수정된 실용식에 의한 내화성능값이 유사하게 됨이 관찰되었다. 감소계수의 적용은 축하중을 받는 벽체에 발생할 수 있는 우발편심 모멘트에 의한 내력감소 영향 등을 추가로 고려함을 의미한다. 그러나 화재 시 벽체가 받은 불확실성에 대한 연구는 앞으로 더 연구되어야 할 필요가 있다.
