As the largest island nation in the world, Indonesia has the rich energy resources and is the world's fourth most populous country. Indonesia is Korea's 10th trading partner and 6th country for foreign direct investment. Since Indonesia joined AFTA recently, the huge AFTA market has been a chance for Korean companies.

After Indonesian government enacted Foreign Investment Law of 1967 in 1967 to attract foreign direct investment, the government has enacted and enforced a new investment law instead of unifying and replacing Foreign Investment Law(1967) and

Domestic Investment Law(1968). Looking into Korea's direct investment in Indonesia, Korea invested 4394729000 dollars, which is for 1339 cases, in Indonesia as of the end of September, 2010.

The problems that possibly occur when Korean companies directly invest in Indonesia are considered from both aspects of Korean companies and Indonesia.

The problems on the Indonesian side are as below. First, the deterioration of the labor market. Second, corruption and complicated administrative procedures. Third, poor social overhead capital infrastructure.

The problems on the Korean companies' side are as below. First, placing too much emphasis on investment area and industry. Second, the lack of the companies' ability to invest abroad. Third, a paucity of information on the local market.

Based on these, the strategies for Korean companies' direct investment in Indonesia are drawn as follows. First, thorough preparation for successful overseas business. Second, the need for a long-term investment strategy. Third, the development of high skilled manpower. Fourth, the diversification of types of business to invest in. Fifth, the establishment of investment strategy for obtaining production within the area and business base. Last, the diversification of expansion areas.
